Blackberry Bush
“Kekionga”, pronounced KEY-key-awn-guh, literally means “blackberry bush” in the Miami–Illinois language. This was the original name for Fort Wayne, back when it was the capital village of the Miami people.
“Its name refers to the abundance of blackberries in the region, and was located in the most expansive brier patch in the state.”
That’s the scoop for this week. 🍦
